Book Review: Crash and Burn by Michael Hassan

Today I am going to be sharing my review for Crash and Burn by Michael Hassan. This was a new release YA book that came out in February. When I first heard about it I knew that it was definitely a book that I wanted to read. It sounded really interesting and intense due to the topics of this book. I'm going to post the summary below and then get started on my review!

This book is told from the main character Steven's (Crash) POV who has just finished his senior year of high school, but he also stopped one of his classmates David (Burn) from blowing up the entire school. Everyone considers Crash a hero, but Crash has a story of his own to tell. Him and Burn have been "frienemies" since elementary school, and while Crash is certain Burn has always been out to get him, some how they always end up in each others paths and are connected some way or another. There is also the big mystery of what Burn whispers to Crash right before Crash convinces him to stop what he is doing. So suspenseful!

This book really grabbed my attention in the beginning, and it switches back and forth from present time (after Crash stopped Burn from blowing up the school), and past time from when he first met Burn and how their lives where leading up to what happened. The story is kind of slow but I didn't really find it to be boring because I was so interested in what was going to happen later so the story held my attention. This book is very, very detailed for a YA novel, almost too detailed. However, as the story being told from Crash's POV and he has ADHD, it is very well written for it being told in his voice. I also really enjoyed reading from Crash's POV. A lot of the time I have a hard time getting into a book if it's told from a male's POV but I really enjoyed this one.


So this book deals with a lot of serious and intense topics; there is a lot of mental illnesses, drugs, sex, suicide etc. If you can't handle reading about these things, then this book is definitely not for you. In a nut shell, Crash has had ADHD his whole life. Burn suffers from a lot of anxiety, depression, and bi-polar disease but that is not even the half of his problems. Crash and Burn have a really interesting relationship. They aren't exactly friends, but they've always been in each others lives. They understand each other, but at the same time they don't. Crash is somewhat afraid of Burn, and for good reasons. Crash has always been there for Burn though all his hard times though. I really enjoyed a lot of the characters in this book. Crash probably has become one of my favorite male lead characters. I really love a lot of the relationships that he has built. You know he cares about his family and friends, and even Burn. I could not stand Crash's father, though. He has definitely topped my most hated parent character. He is such a jerk and treats Crash like crap for no reason. I wanted to slap him.

Burn was a character that was a lot different from any character that I've read from. Like I said before, he has a lot of issues. And by a lot, I mean a lot. Not only is he dealing with all of those issues above, (spoiler alert!!!) his father was killed during 9/11 and that made a huge impact on him. Also he loses his mother to breast cancer later on in the book, which he does not handle well at all. Some of the time during the book, Burn does seem pretty normal (almost) but he has a lot of ups and downs from his depression and the medication he is on. Crash describes this as "When he's up, he's really up. And when he's down, he's really down." And when Burn is down it is quite scary during a lot of the book.


I really liked Roxanne in this book as well. She is Burn's older sister and they are both protective over one another. I really enjoyed Crash's relationship with her. He sees her for who she is, and not who she tries to be or who everyone else thinks she is. I liked Crash's younger sister Jamie, and also a lot of Crash's friends in the book. There isn't too much to say on the characters who didn't play a big part in the book, though.

In the last 60 or so pages in this book (when Burn goes ape shit) , Crash warns you that you will not want to stop reading so don't even try. Which is so true. The ending of this book was so intense and gripping,  I couldn't even handle it. Well, I could but you get the picture. Even though Crash saved everyone and it was a 'happy ending', this book made me feel sad. Even though Burn is completely crazy and tries to kill everyone including himself, It's really hard not to feel pity for him. This is the type of book that will stir a lot of emotions in you while you read it.  When I finished it, my first thoughts were "omg this is such a great book", but the more I thought about it the less I thought so. Don't get me wrong it WAS a great book, but this is the type of book that leave you feeling really unsettled. This story seemed so real that it was almost heart breaking. Also when you find out what the big secret is of what Burn whispered to Crash at the end, I was so sad. I was completely heart broken at what was revealed. This is one book that I will definitely never forgot, and I'll never forget these character either. I'm not exactly sure if it is a good thing because this story just felt so heavy on my heart after I read it.  None the less, I am glad to have read it because I do enjoy books that have an impact on me.

Upcoming Spring 2013 Young Adult Book Releases!

Hey Everyone! Today I am going to share some upcoming YA new release books for this spring and summer! I found some books coming out within the next few months that sounds really great and I can't wait to read them!




If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch coming out on March 26th. This book seemed really interesting to me. It's about a 15 year old girl who lives hidden in a broken down camper in the woods with her younger sister and mental ill mother. This will be one that I am definitely going to pick up!









My Life After Now by Jessica Verdi coming out on April 2nd. This books stars Lucy, who's life is turned up side down after a horrible week during her junior year in high school. She wants to get away from her life and then she does something that will changer her life forever.









Moonset by Scott Tracey coming out on April 8th. This is the first book in a Legacy of Moonset series. This series is about (from bn.com description) "Witches and their troubling family legacy." I absolutely love books about witchcraft and I am always wanting to read more. Also, I really love this cover for this book!

Dead Silence by Kimberly Derting (4th book in the Body Finder Series) coming out on April 16th. This is series that I absolutely love. The Body Finder series is such so amazing and gripping. It's suspenseful, and keeps you on edge the whole time while reading. I can't wait to read this one!








Chosen at Nightfall (Shadow Falls series #5) By C.C Hunter coming out on April 23rd. I am so excited about this book. This is another series that I really love and have been waiting for this book to come out. I am sad that this is the final book in the series but I really think it will be a great one. There is also a short novella to this series coming out in April as well called Saved at Sunrise.






The Program by Suzanne Young coming out on April 30th. This book was one that I thought sounded really good and interesting as well. This is a dystopian book where teenagers get 'infected' with depression and teen suicide is epidemic. The solution to this is called The Program, where they send teenager to cure them. Their depression is gone but they also take away their memories. So the main character tries hard to hide her true feelings to avoid getting sent to the program but as her depression gets worse, it gets harder. I thought this book sounded really good when I first herd about it, however the subject of this book is really touchy to me as of late so I am not sure if I will be picking it up right away. 

Invisibility by Andrea Cremer and David Levithan coming out on May 7th. I am super excited about this one! These are two really great writers who teamed up to write this book that sounds so amazing. It's about a boy named Stephen who is cursed with being invisible, but then he meets a girl named Elizabeth who can see him. But as they becoming closer to each other an invisible world gets in their way and threatens everything.






Star Cursed (2nd book in the Cahill Witch Chronicles) by Jessica Spotswood coming out on June 18th. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Born Wicked, and I can't wait for this next book in the series. Like I said before, I really enjoy books about witchcraft, and this one is a really good one!

Another Book Tag

Hello Everyone! Today I am going to do another book tag which I found while watching some Youtube videos. I am in sort of a reading slump this month so that is why I have not posted any book reviews lately. It's already almost halfway through March and I've only read one book so far :(. I have hopes that this months reading for me will get better because The Clockwork Princess is coming out in a week! Woo hoo!  I still wanted to keep my blog updated though so I thought I'd do a book tag!


1. What Book are you reading now? An Abundance of Katherines by John Green.

2.  What are you favorite books? I have way too many favorites to name. Definitely Harry Potter is my all time favorite books/series ever. Looking for Alaska by John Green. Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare etc. Night Road by Kristina Hannah. The Pact by Jodi Picoult.

3. How did you learn to read? How didn't I? o.O

4. What Foreign languages do you read in? None.

5. Whats the funniest book you've ever read? No book for this question is really is standing out to me. I'm not too sure I've exactly read a funny or humor book but I do find my self randomly laughing at books while reading. While reading John Green books I always find there is a character in all of this books that is humorous.

6. What books have changed the way you look at the world or the way you live your life? I'm not exactly sure how to answer this because every book that I read changes the way I think in some way or another.

7. What books have affirmed what you believe about life or the way you look at things? Same answer as above.

8. What are some of the scariest books you've ever read? I have not read a true horror books before, but I have read a few YA ghost books. Bad Girls don't die by Katie Alender and The MacKinnion Curse series by J.A Templeton were really creepy.

9. About how many books do you think you've read in your life? Well, I have over 200 books on my book shelf just from the past 2-3 years. So I'm going to guess 400-500?

10. About how many books do you own? 200-300 probably.

11. How many books per month do you usually borrow from the library? None, I buy all of my books because I like to own them.

12. How much would you say you've paid in library fines in your life? None. I don't even remember the last time I got a book from the library, and when I was younger my mom always made sure they were back on time.

13. Do you read in bed? Sometimes. I normally do all of my reading while I am at work. Before I spent all of my time at work, I would read at home in bed. If I am about to finish a book I sometimes will finish it before I go to sleep.

14. Do you ever read while walking or driving? That sounds dangerous.

15. Where is the strangest place you've ever read a book? I'm not sure if I've ever read in a strange place. Maybe in my car while it was parked outside? I'm pretty sure I was about to finish a book one time and I sat in my car after I got out of work and finished it before I drove home.

16. Do you listen to audio books? No I do not. If I was driving by myself for along period of time I probably would though. I would like to listen to an audio book but I have not yet.

17. Has any one ever read aloud to you or you to them? Yes, many times when I was in school.

18. What was the most difficult books for you to read? I have a hard time reading classic books. I tried to read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin and Lord of the Rings many times but they were hard for me to pay attention to what was going on.

19. What books do you intend to read by keep putting off? The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit.

20. Do you buy new or used books? Paperbacks or Hardcovers? Normally I buy new books but I have bought used ones before and I'm not apposed to them. I buy both paperback and hardcovers.

21. How do you feel about writing in books? I never use to write in any of my books. I always fold the corners of pages in books when I find something that I like, but lately I have been wanting to highlight or underline things in my books that I like that are sentimental to me.

22. Do you lend out your books? All of the time. I always lend my books out to my close friends. I love sharing them.

23. What were your favorite books as a child? I loved Number the Stars when I was younger. That was my all time favorite book. And since Harry Potter came out when I was 9 or 10 I can count those too.

24. Which children's books do you enjoy? I have not read a children's book in a long time. Some people consider Harry Potter a children's series (I do not) and also I enjoyed the Percy Jackson series which is found in the children's section I believe.

25. Do you ever read the ending of the book first? No I do not. However sometimes when I'm checking to see how many pages are in the book my eyes wander sometimes haha.

February Wrap Up

Hello Everyone, today I am going to be doing my wrap up post for what I read in February. This month I read 5 books, and it was an okay reading month for me. I didn't read as many books as I hoped to read, but I will just try to catch up next month in March.




The Archived by Victoria Schwab. This was the first book that I read this month and it's one that I really enjoyed. I was really excited to read this book since it seemed a lot different from any book that I've read before. The beginning and first half of the book was really slow and I almost put it down but I am so glad that I didn't. The book really picks up after the second half and the story line gets really engaging. You can read my review for this book here.






Moonglass by Jessi Kirby. This was the first book by this author that I've read and I was really excited to read this one. I also purchased one of her other books called In Honor at the same time, which I am also excited to read. This book seemed like a 'cute summer read book' to me. I liked it okay and ended up giving it a 3/5 stars on goodreads. A lot of the time I didn't know where the story was going and I was a little bored reading it. The book has a great main character though and there were a lot of things I liked about the book as well.







Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead. I absolutely loved this book. So, so much. I love the Bloodlines series and basically anything that this author writes. This book was phenomenal and it was definitely my favorite book so far in the series. I just can't say enough good things about this book. I can't wait for the 4th book in the series to come out and it's probably going to be one of my most anticipated books for this year! You can read my review for this book here.







Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz. This is a book that I couldn't decide if I loved it or I hated it. It has a very different and strange storyline that I was not expecting at all. The author's writing style is really engaging and I really liked the way she wrote this book and most of her characters. This one I ended up giving a 4/5 stars on goodreads because overall I really enjoyed it, despite the strangeness. You can read my review for this book here.






Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess. This is a book that I have been wanting to read for a few years now, but I just never picked it up until a few months ago when I found it in the bargain books section on Amazon. It was a really quick read and I read it in almost one setting. I liked the book okay but it was also kind of simple. This book is about a girl whose father was suppose to be locked away for 9 years, but he gets out of prison after 3. Now she's not safe and everything is messed up. For me this book was too simple, when I read books dealing with these kind of serious topics I usually want them to have more emotion to them. I definitely felt for the main character, but I just thought this book was lacking something. I gave this one a 3/5 stars on goodreads as well.

This is all for my February wrap up post. I also tried to read Lucid by Adrienne Stoltz, but It was not a book that I could get into unfortunately. I hope next month will be a good reading month and I am starting it out with a Jodi Picolut book :).

Book Review: Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz

Today I am going to be sharing my review for the book Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz. This was the first book that I've read written by this author. It was a new release this year and it was one of the books on my winter TBR list for upcoming new releases that I was excited about. I'm going to post the summary from Goodreads below and then jump right into my review!

Rudy’s life is flipped upside-down when his family moves to a remote island in a last attempt to save his sick younger brother. With nothing to do but worry, Rudy sinks deeper and deeper into loneliness and lies awake at night listening to the screams of the ocean beneath his family’s rickety house.

Then he meets Diana, who makes him wonder what he even knows about love, and Teeth, who makes him question what he knows about anything. Rudy can’t remember the last time he felt so connected to someone, but being friends with Teeth is more than a little bit complicated. He soon learns that Teeth has terrible secrets. Violent secrets. Secrets that will force Rudy to choose between his own happiness and his brother’s life.

So this book is about Rudy, who moves to a remote island with his family because his younger brother, Dylan, has Cystic Fibrosis and this island has these 'magic' fish that are suppose to heal sickness. Since Rudy left his home, school, and all of his friends he is really lonely here on this island. All he does is sit and worry about his brother and listen to the rough ocean at night. He meets a girl named Diana, and a boy named Teeth. And by boy, I really mean Fishboy. Teeth is a mermaid (merman?) and he befriends him. Teeth and Diana are both very lonely people as well.

This book was very, very strange. It was definitely not like I expected it to be at all. It's one of those book I can't decide if I love it, or I hated it.  A lot of the time I was thinking 'wtf' while reading it because things were so messed up. The fishboy/mermaid thing totally threw me off and I wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.  The writing style in this book was very different, but it was also very engaging and I liked it a lot. The first chapter had my attention right away and it drew me in. It had a very eerie feel to it and it was really intriguing. This book is very dark, and there is not much (if not any) happiness in it at all. So much that even while I was reading it I couldn't even picture the weather being sunny or nice, or the ocean being beautiful. The whole time I was reading I just pictured the days being dark, cloudy, and cold. I pictured the water being gross, sandy, and murky much like a lake rather than the ocean. Rudy describes the water as freezing.

I'm not sure if I liked Rudy's character. His thoughts are really random, scattered and don't make much sense. I didn't really understand him a lot of the time and I found that I couldn't connect with him, either. He seems kind of negative, and he drops the 'f bomb' on every single page (I'm not kidding, usually at least 3 times a page) which I found to be annoying. I usually don't mind this kind of language in books, but this was a little excessive. I do like how he cares about his little brother though. I really enjoyed the parts where he talked about his brother a lot.  I liked Diana okay but I didn't find her role in the book as big as I thought it should have been. I didn't understand her relationship with Rudy. They didn't seem to get to know each other and it was really annoying how they were all over each other with in the first 5 minutes of them hanging out for the first time. I do like how they both love books, and both talk about books with each other. I really loved that they put references to Harry Potter and Looking for Alaska in this book. After Rudy and Teeth become friends, they are really loyal to each other and have a connection that is great. You can tell Rudy really cares about him.

At first I wasn't sure if I liked Teeth or not. He had an attitude but as the story progressed he really warmed up and I began to like him. This weird, fish boy of a character, really began to grow on me and touch my emotions. I had a really hard time picturing what he looked like though, and it drove me crazy the whole book. He's a mermaid, with a tail, webbed hands, and a million crazy long teeth that look like pine needles. Rudy described him as: "His tail is skinny and silver, the same colors as Dylan's fish. All his scales, especially the ones on his chest, look dry, like they're about to flake off. His hair is short and uneven. Mermaids in fairy tales were never this ugly. Mermen." OK I can picture that just fine, seems like a normal person but his teeth? I cannot picture those teeth on a normal person's face. Ugh. I really like how much Teeth cares about the other fish in the ocean. He calls them his family and there were parts in the book when he cuddles them and such. This sounds weird but I found it strangely cute. There's a part on page 79 when he talks about saving the fish that says "I don't usually see them get caught in the current, I've only rescued three today. The others I just say hi to." That is too freaking cute. I also love how Teeth uses the word 'whatever' in place of using a word that he doesn't know. He doesn't have the biggest vocabulary since he doesn't have anyone to talk to.

The storyline behind how Teeth came about (being half fish, half human) is really strange and messed up. I was totally not expecting this book to be about a mermaid, let alone how the mermaid was made. My heart was constantly breaking for him as we learn more about him and the situation, especially when Rudy describes his screams at night time. All of the horrible things he goes through and all of the abuse was just heart breaking, even more so towards the end.

The ending was bittersweet, but I personally that everything happened for the best. There's freedom for both Rudy and Teeth and I feel like they can both grow a lot more as a person/character after what happened. I gave this book 3/5 stars on goodreads, but not looking back I might change my rating to 4 stars. It's the kind of book you have to read and then let your thoughts process before rating/reviewing it. Non the less, I am happy I read this book and I can't wait to read more books by Hannah Moskowitz.  I hope you all enjoyed and thank you for reading!

Book Review: The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

Today I am going to share my review on the Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead. This book is the 3rd book in the Bloodlines series, which is a spin off series of the Vampire Academy Series. Vampire Academy is one of my all time favorite series for a lot of different reasons. The spin off series, Bloodline is just as great as Vampire Academy in my opinion. I really enjoyed the first book, Bloodlines, and the second book The Golden Lily which I read last October (you can read my review for it here). I was really, really excited about The Indigo Spell, and since I just read the 2nd book a few months ago most of everything was still fresh in my mind. I really have to say that this book is the best yet in the series and I am so excited for the next one to time out. Now I'm going to get started with my review but for anyone who has not read any of these books there will probably be spoilers.

So this book pretty much picks up not long after the what happened at the end of The Golden Lily. Sydney and Adrian finally have their (forbidden) moment between them and Sydney is freaking out. She also learned about an ex Alchemist named Marcus Finch who is on the run. She longs to find him and figure out his secrets on how he left the Alchemist and why. Since Sydney is starting to rebel and realize she is being lied to, she is starting to look at the bigger picture of things and what/who she truly cares about. There's also an evil witch on the run who is hunting young witches, and just might be after Sydney too.

Like I said before, I really enjoyed this book. It's probably the best books that I've read in a while. The storyline was really engaging and I was never bored while reading it. Richelle Mead is such a great writer and she has a way of making this world she created and the characters in it seem so real. I pretty much have loved every book and character that she has written in these two series. There is always such excited action in her books and they always have a great climax, this book included. I really liked how there was a lot more focus on magic in this book as well. It gives it a nice twist and puts more into the story line. We are introduced to a lot of new character's in this book, and of course it has an ending that always leaves you hanging.

Sydney is such a fantastic main character for this series and I really like reading from her POV. She is really strong headed and she really grows a lot as a character in this book. The author also has such an amazing way of writing romances in these books that drive you completely crazy. She did it with Rose and Dimitri in VA and now she's doing it with Sydney and Adrain. Speaking of Adrian...Oh. My. GOD. Adrian has got to be my new all time favorite male character. Ever. I really liked him during the VA series but in this series he is so phenomenal. I'm really glad he is a main character in this series because it just wouldn't be complete without him. The 4th book is going to alternate POV from Sydney and Adrain. I was so excited when I herd this because we finally get to see what's inside that screwed up, hilarious, but beautiful head of his.

The Fiery Heart is going to be told from both Sydney and Adrian's points of view. That's right. If you've ever wanted to get inside the crazy world of Adrian Ivashkov's head, this is it. It'll still be in first person, but the POV will alternate chapters. I'm so excited about this, it's not even funny. Well, actually...since it's Adrian, it'll be hilarious. I think you guys'll love it, and for those who still haven't made the transition to the Bloodlines series, now's your chance! #1 and #2 are out, and it's not too late to catch up before February.

I can't even express how excited I am about this next book in the series! Reading the Indigo Spell has made me want to go back and re read all of the Vampire Academy books and the other two Bloodlines books as well. Ahhh okay, I'm done gushing about how much I loved this book now. I hope you all enjoyed my review and happy reading!

Top 10 Love Stories (Valentines Day books!)

Hey Everyone! Today in honor of Valentines Day I'm going to share my top ten favorite love stories! I know Valentines Day was on Thursday, so this post is a little late but I still wanted to do it because I didn't have time to on actual Valentines Day. When I think of my favorite love story books, I naturally graduate more towards adult fiction books like ones written by Nicholas Sparks. I don't know why but in books like these I have found the best (or my favorite) love stories. All of my top ten books except 2 of them are adult fiction but I have two young adult books in there as well. I hope you enjoy this post and if you're in the mood for a sappy love story that will probably make you cry then please check out some of these books!




1. Message in a Bottle by Nicholas Sparks. Like I said before, my first thoughts when I think of love stories is books written by Nicholas Sparks. I have read all of his books and they are really wonderful but a few of them have stuck out more than others and Message in a Bottle is one of them. I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. As I was reading all of the books written by him a few years ago, I started with the newer released ones so I read Message in a Bottle as one of the last ones. I think this was one of the first books he wrote but I was so late to read it. This book was really heart breaking but so wonderful at the same time. I absolutely loved everything about it.




2. The Choice by Nicholas Sparks. You know how we all have that one book that made you cry more than any other book ever has? This is that book for me. Even though It made me cry so much, a lot of it was tears of sadness but happiness too. This book was heart breaking but it ended up having a happy ending to it. It was such a fantastic book and I can't say enough times how great it is.








3. A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks. OK after this one, I promise I'm done with this author haha. This is my all time favorite love story (book and movie) I absolutely love this book but this is one that I seen the movie first, so naturally I am partial to the movie because that's what I knew of the story first. The movie is a little but different, but that's okay because I do love both the book and movie equally.







4. The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. This is another love story that I really, really love. The time traveling in this book is beyond amazing. This is a very detailed book and it is sort of long but none the less wonderful. I also really enjoyed the movie of this book as well.









5. Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. This one also is a great love story, and the movie was also enjoyable. It was a really great read that I read fairly quickly because I couldn't put it down.











6. Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. This is one of the best books that I have ever read. It's a lot different from the other love stories that I have read, but I think that's why I loved it so much. It didn't have over the top, head over heals in love kind of love story but a slow one that grows with time. It's such a beautiful story and I can't say enough great things about it.








7. Night Road by Kristin Hannah. I'm not exactly sure if this book would be considered a 'love story' or not. The love story in this book definitely isn't the main focus but it is one of my all time favorite books. The two people in the book who are part of the love story just go through so much together and still manage to be together in the end. It's so inspiring so that is why I'm including it in my favorites.








8. The Pact by Jodi Picoult. This is another one that has a lot of other focuses in the book rather than the love story. But like Night Road, it is one of my favorite books ever so I am including it because this book is so wonderful and heartbreaking.







9. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. This is one of the two YA books I am including because this book has a really amazing love story in it. The two main characters, Hazel and Gus have a wonderful romance that just melted my heart. I absolutely adored this book.









10. The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. I don't typically find a great romance in YA fantasy books/series but this one is one of the best (in my opinion). Rose and Dimitri's love and romance in this series is unbelievable and it my favorite love story in all of YA fantasy books. It's such a great forbidden love that it drove me crazy all through the books in this series. I was definitely rooting from these characters since book one!
